I intended to make the viewer feel as if they were looking out at a scene through a window in a dark room. This is why I chose to use black paper for my pages. The title of my book, "What I Saw" is supposed to be ironic; all my photos are photoshop manipulations. What my title really means is: "what I didn't see".
All my pictures are taken outside and near the coast. The breezy air gives my photos a sense of movement in the composition and the clear, bright light gives my images a similar color scheme and contrast. In all my images, I used natural textures as overlays to give the impression that the scene existed in more than one dimension. For example, in my photo of a girl twirling on a patio overlooking the ocean, I did an overlay of water of the patio so it looks like the water on the horizon continued over the patio and she was dancing on water.
Other students who do this project should be very purposeful in how they construct their pictures. They should be very deliberate in what elements they include in their images. If they do this, the project should be very rewarding.

i love that you've continued on with an intentional vision and theme from the house of my mind project. these images have an antiquated feel to them with the color palette and texture. it is so curious since you are using quite modern media. i am particularly intrigued by the ultimate and penultimate images. (although you might consider rotating them for better readability).
ReplyDeleteI really like the photographs in your book, and I think they fit together really well as a series. I really like your title as well. I also really liked how you made some of the photographs look like polaroids, I almost wish you had done it to all of you pictures! I really love the last photograph in this post, I think it would be really cool if you printed it larger on its own.
ReplyDeleteI thought your photographs went really well together as a book. All of them have the same sort of tone to them that seems almost faded and I thought that was interesting. I think the most successful photograph is the last one on this post of the person sitting on the beach. I thought it was really nicely framed and edited.
ReplyDeleteI think you were very successful at creating a series based on a unique vision of using texture to tweak the way different parts of your photographs interact with the whole. Your use of polaroid-style frames and barbed wire to create barriers within the photograph is intriguing, and your photos are wonderfully ethereal.
ReplyDeleteHi Brooke!
ReplyDeleteAll of your pictures displayed great effort and use of photoshop. I also really enjoyed your time in using the beach as an effective tool in getting your point across. It seems the saturation played a huge role in your book, along with your theme.
Good Job!
I thought your photographs all went well together and the series felt very unified. Your theme of the series played to your strengths in Photoshop and displayed your individual style. The way you used lots of layers and blended them together made all of your pictures very unique. Overall very handsome series.
ReplyDeleteYou did a really good job with photoshop, and the use of it added a lot to your pictures. All the pictures seemed to tell a story which was a really cool aspect of your book. The idea to use polaroid film as a border was very innovative.
ReplyDeleteBrooke, all of your photos worked very well together as a series. I thought the choice of a black background for your book was spot on and made your pictures pop. Overall I really enjoyed looking at your book, it was very soothing! Well done!
ReplyDeleteBrooke! Your photos are amazing and really eye-catching! I think the reduced opacity of all (or most of) the layers in all the pictures gives the series a really neat sense of cohesion. In the eighth actual image from the top (the one with the girl and the tree to the left side), it appears as it the ocean extends over the coastline onto the land. However, it also looks like that ocean and the coastline is from the same image. It's kind of hard to explain what I am trying to say, but, I was really amazed at the Photoshop skills and knowledge that you showed in this project. With each photo, I had to pause and take a second look to get the real meaning and whole picture. Great job and nicely executed!
ReplyDeleteBrooke! I absolutely love how you have the almost desaturated and pastel images that are underneath the telephone line or barbed wire. Your images work beautifully as a collection and I love your use of coastline and the tall grass throughout your photos. Great work!
